Microbiology The spirochaetes are long, spiral (or helical)-shaped Gram-negative bacteria. They are very slender and weakly refractile, and therefore not easily visible under ordinary light microscopy. They are visualized with dark-ground microscopy, silver staining or immunofluorescence.
