ABSTRACT
Microbiology Escherichia coli is the principal pathogen. A minority of infections are caused by staphylococci, Proteus, Klebsiella, enterococci and Pseudomonas. Within hospitals more infections are due to Klebsiella, other coliforms, Pseudomonas and enterococci. Hospital bacteria generally have higher levels of antibiotic resistance.
