ABSTRACT

Q. What is the single joint compressive force that is acting on the knee in this standing position in a 75 kg athlete?

Weight (W) = mass (kg) ¥ acceleration due to gravity (m/s2)

Acceleration due to the gravitational attractive force from the Earth varies by a small amount (negligible) according to your position on the surface of the Earth however, in this example we will consider it to be 9.81 m/s2. Therefore we can now calculate the weight of the athlete. It is important to note that weight will have the units of Newtons (N) because it represents the force acting on the athlete by virtue of gravitational effect caused by the mass of the Earth.
