ABSTRACT

Globalisation, in its various aspects, and armed conflicts are arguably among the most important determinants for the future of terrorism. Their multiple impacts are not necessarily direct, however, even if certain aspects of globalisation, such as increased flow of capital, commodities, people and ideas across borders have a profound effect on the environment in which terrorists operate and on the means available to them. As already alluded to, the impact of globalisation will be a recurrent theme throughout this book, as its influences on more specific processes of change are explored. Globalisation has also altered the nature and ramifications of armed conflicts. In this chapter, I will explore the most salient features of globalisation and armed conflicts and suggest different ways in which they will shape the future of terrorism.
