ABSTRACT

The previous chapter has developed insights into an array of justice theories concerned with individuals, groups and the whole of society. The scope of this literature can be somewhat daunting to a practitioner setting policies or making decisions about resources. However, we saw in Chapter 1 that fairness is important in environmental decision making on renewable energy, and we discussed the importance of perceived injustice in Chapter 2. The challenge now is to devise an approach in which we can understand what is happening in a social conflict over resource allocation, and what we can learn from that to reduce conflict and bring about better outcomes for those involved. In other words, we need to devise a research approach in this middle ground between theory and the practical reality of conflict. At this point, those readers who wish to proceed directly to the two water case studies may continue on to Chapter 4.
