ABSTRACT

A feminist sociology is one that is not just or necessarily about women but one that challenges and confronts the male supremacy that institutionalises women’s inequality. The defining characteristic of feminism is the view that women’s relative subordination must be questioned and challenged. This involves:

• feminist research (that attempts to document and describe the main social differences and inequalities between men and women);

• feminist theory (that attempts to explain and account for these differences and inequalities);

• feminist politics (that attempts to challenge and resist inequalities between men and women).
