ABSTRACT
The previous chapters have discussed earlier approaches to the subject of harmonics, both mathematical and empirical. Although he accepted some empirical theorists as his predecessors, Aristoxenus has drawn his methodology primarily from Aristotle. Accordingly, the present chapter examines in more detail the way in which he applies the Aristotelian criteria of scientific investigation to the pre-existing but ill-defined discipline which examines musical phenomena.
