ABSTRACT

We have presented a framework for treating compulsive overeating that integrates direct interventions into clients’ eating patterns with a psychological understanding of the function of the overeating behavior. This approach also uses research to validate the reality that diets do not work and that people naturally come in different shapes and sizes. We explored the cultural pressures that contribute to body dissatisfaction, which are frequently used by clients to represent internal conflicts. While we will offer more information about health issues and suggestions for prevention in the final chapters, at this time we invite you to consider the practical implications for your work as a therapist in relationship to treating clients with compulsive eating problems. Some of these considerations will raise questions that do not necessarily have a single answer but require you to think about your own treatment philosophy as well as the needs of your clients.
