ABSTRACT

I grew up in one of the most beautiful places in America, but did not know it at the time. Only now, spending a few days working on cultural conservation at the Getty Center, just two hills away from where I grew up, do I appreciate this landscape of endless sky and water framed by bare mountains (photograph 17). The entire day is spent sitting inside architect Richard Meier’s stone-and-glass monument arguing about economics and culture. At least I am sitting on the side of the room facing the windows. The sunlight is so piercing I have to put on dark glasses.
