ABSTRACT

For two reasons it is worthwhile to devote a chapter to the cognitive control of ‘ballistic’ saccadic eye movements. One is that for most visual information processing tasks, e.g., for inspecting an object or a scene and for reading a text, the ‘ballistic’ saccadic eye movements are of prime importance (see Section 7.1). The other is that saccadic eye movements, unaccompanied by other behaviours, are the vast majority of behavioural acts (see Section 8.1). Therefore, when I can adequately handle the cognitive control of saccadic eye movements, I have not only dealt with the vast majority of behavioural acts but also with the acts that are of prime importance in real-life visual information processing tasks.
