ABSTRACT

DANTO, ARTHUR Arthur Coleman Danto (1924-) is one of America’s foremost analytic philosophers. His work has ranged across several of the major fields and figures of philosophy, although today he is probably best known for his contributions to the philosophy of art. Born 1 January 1924 in Ann Arbor, Michigan, Danto spent most of his childhood in Detroit, where he was a frequent visitor to the Detroit Institute of Arts. As a young man he wanted to become an artist, and after serving for two years in the Army, he studied art and worked briefly as a painter. Around the same time he took up the study of philosophy, entering Columbia University as a graduate student in the late 1940s.
