ABSTRACT
VAGUENESS At first glance the term ‘‘vague’’ may seem to be an exclusively negative or unimportant one. That is, a vague situation appears to be one that needs to be cleared up or defined in a more precise fashion. The key here is to turn the vague into a ‘‘problem’’ to be solved. Metaphysically speaking, being or reality is viewed as possessing more defining features than mere vagueness. Epistemologically speaking, truth should be identified with objectivity or certainty, with what is immediately given or self-evident.
