ABSTRACT

WARRANTED ASSERTIBILITY ‘‘Warranted assertibility’’ is a term introduced by John Dewey to avoid the implications of the word ‘‘truth’’ when speaking of the central desirable characteristic of a statement expressing a judgment. Independently of the technicalities of Dewey’s thought, an assertion is warranted when it is adequately justified – relative to the circumstances in which it is made – in terms of its grounds (the evidence on which it is based) and its consequences (the reliability of the guidance that it provides).
