ABSTRACT
As the new year 1949 dawned, during the four months before the Communists entered Shanghai, most of the city’s newspapers and journals not connected to the GMD began to slant more toward the left.1 This phenomenon was apparent in the articles and editorials of the China Weekly Review also, as it began to clarify a policy which would allow it to survive within the new political climate.
