ABSTRACT

Having no partner she turns her life to suit herself but I wouldn’t call her selfish. She’s this strange mix of timidity and ineffective assertion which is often typical of women of her generation and middle class background. She doesn’t grumble much about all her ailments which she bears with increasing difficulty as the years pass. Her eyesight is failing fast (some sort of degenerative eye condition beginning ‘M’—macula or something); she’s been plagued by depression all her life and recently she’s had to cope with an unsuccessful-in that it has dislocated twice through no real fault of hers it seems-hip joint replacement.
