ABSTRACT

I’m an interpreter. I work for a local authority, and am booked by health and local authority workers for interviews with users of their services who have little proficiency in English. My second language is French, and I interpret predominantly for refugees from the African continent for whom French is their first European language. I’m thus a fly on the wall to the interactions of professionals with the users of their services. Here are two examples showing professionals who do (or don’t) ‘go the extra mile’.
