ABSTRACT
Charles Sumner Bowman was born in Mississippi circa 1873.1 His mother, Mattie [sic Marta] Bowman, worked as a maid and laundress in Vicksburg while raising Charles and his three siblings, Lilly, Paul, and Victoria. Mattie was widowed by the age of twentyeight and the identity of Charles’ father is not known.
