ABSTRACT
According to contemporary sources Calvin Brent was the first African American architect in the District of Columbia and the only one practicing in the last quarter of the nineteenth century. Although little is known about the man, his architectural training, or his practice, city building permits reveal that Brent worked in all quadrants of the city, designing at least eighty-two houses, two stores, and six churches during his twenty-fiveyear career.1
