ABSTRACT

Albert Grant Brown was born on a farm in Campbell’s Creek, West Virginia. His father was Benjamin Brown, who farmed in Campbell’s Creek, kept boarders, and served as a deacon in the African Methodist Zion Church in Malden. His mother was Margaret Ferguson Brown, who served the community as a midwife. Maggie Brown was a master’s child from Hale’s Ford, Virginia, who was born at about the same time and in the same vicinity as BOOKER TALIFERRO WASHINGTON. Washington helped organize the Sunday school at the African Methodist Zion Church and later became principal of TUSKEGEE INSTITUTE.
