ABSTRACT

Robert Lionel Fields was born on May 18, 1918, in Charleston, South Carolina, the eldest son of Mamie Garvin Fields and Robert Lucas Fields. He was educated at Avery Institute in Charleston. Because at the time there were no secondary schools in Charleston for an African American aspiring to become an architect, at the age of fourteen his parents sent him to Armstrong Technical High School in Washington, D.C. Upon completing high school, Field entered HOWARD UNIVERSITY, where he earned a bachelor of science in architecture in 1945.
