ABSTRACT

The project began with C.J. Hayes applying for a Nuffield Foundation Home Civil Service Fellowship. William Alexander Robson discussed the figures with one of his colleagues who specialised in statistical analysis, and wrote to Helsby pointing out that it was important to know how many candidates were being examined by examiners in various universities. There was almost daily exchange of correspondence in January 1955, because by then Robson was preparing the material from the special issue and commissioning other material for the book. Helsby discussed this with Bridges and Padmore on 10 January, by which time Bridges had also seen Robson. Robson’s letter to Helsby of 17 July gave him the assurance he sought: the editorial from the special issue would not be included in the book, and Robson agreed to redraft his own chapter to take account of the points made by the Commission.
