ABSTRACT
The period from 1897 to 1905 includes the scramble amongst foreign powers for concessions in 1897–8, the Boxer uprising of 1900, the conclusion of the First and Second Anglo-Japanese Agreements of Alliance in 1902 and 1905 and the Russo-Japanese War of 1904–5. They were challenging times, high noon for the Western powers' imperialism 1 in Asia. Morrison was a product of the British Empire, which, he believed, led and protected world civilization.
