ABSTRACT

Various studies have shown that the construction industry needs to improve its safety performance. In order to do so, learning from past incidents is one of the most basic processes in which the industry should engage in. However, currently there is a lack of models and systems to facilitate such a learning process. Thus, this chapter presents an incident causation model, the Modified Loss Causation Model (MLCM), which provides the framework for the codification and analysis of incident investigation information. Detailed categorisations of causal factors and incident sequence variables, based on the MLCM, were developed. The categorisations are hierarchical; allowing the user to zoom in to obtain the necessary details or “zoom out” to obtain sufficient data for statistical analysis. The categorisation framework can accommodate an international construction incident database and incident investigation.
