ABSTRACT

Bruce strides to center stage and stands, legs spread, behind the microphone and begins to deliver an oration in the fashion of his favorite television evangelist, the Reverend Jimmy Lee Swaggart of Ferriday, Louisiana, cousin of Jerry Lee Lewis and no mean player of honky-tonk gospel piano himself. Since Bruce’s accents have always had a slightly Southern tang—the result of his youth in Freehold’s “Texas,” no doubt—the effect is extraordinarily convincing.
