ABSTRACT

Pollution is defined as the introduction of anything that adversely or unreasonably impairs the beneficial use of water and air, even though actual health hazard may not be involved. The main sources of pollution can be liquid or solid, organic or inorganic. Suspended solids are most abundant when water is carrying erosion products in suspension in the flow. These suspended solids can be a great problem, for example, in industrial processes involving filtering, where particles can clog up the filters and be deposited in slow-moving parts of the plant’s circulation system. However, they are not usually regarded as pollutants because of their natural origin and ubiquitous occurrence.
