ABSTRACT
Desertification is a widely used but poorly understood word, about which there has been confusion, uncertainty and even obfuscation. This confusion has led to international difficulties in agreeing the causes, extent and remedial efforts needed to offset its impacts, so much so that, even though it is included in the World Bank’s top ten global environment problems, some people question whether it actually exists as a phenomenon, especially in southern Europe.
