ABSTRACT
National parks are among the most striking achievements of contemporary conservation. They are often immense and long-established, and have obtained great cultural significance as outstanding examples of the natural world. They defy, however, simple definition. They are not easily categorized. Any pre-conceived ideas have to be re-worked. Everything depends upon how the notion of national parks resonated with the thinking and practices of the particular place and time.
