ABSTRACT

The exploration of the prospects for, and barriers to, the promotion of sustainable development began with an examination of environmentalism as a critique of the conventional model of development. Exploring the critique served to differentiate the model of sustainable development from the conventional approach. This helped to clarify what the model of sustainable development is designed to promote. The exploration outlined how the rise of environmentalism led to a fundamental questioning of the basic tenets of the Western development model, in particular as pursued in the post-war period of modernization.
