ABSTRACT
Poverty is not solely due to low incomes and inadequate public services, but also arises from the relations of social life characteristic of capitalism. Workingclass people reproduce themselves by earning a wage or drawing a state benefit, sharing this income within private households of varying composition, purchasing goods and services, and performing unpaid work for their household or neighbours. In this chapter we examine these processes and their spatiality, and how they deepen poverty.
