ABSTRACT
Some self-taught songwriters, and some great ones, don’t read music, but these exceptions will not excuse you from becoming a reading musician yourself. If you hope to build a professional career, you must read music. You should be able, overnight if not instantly, to sing and play a reasonable facsimile of what’s written on the paper in front of you.
