ABSTRACT

Familia (plural familiae), ‘‘household’’, term used to describe the group of gladiators owned by a lanista and the drivers and horses of stables attached to a Roman circus faction.

Felix, Roman charioteer, first century. At Felix’s funeral, a distraught devotee of his Red circus faction threw himself on his pyre in grief – an act attributed by fans of other factions to the effects of scents, incense and anything but sense.
