ABSTRACT

There is a general perception that concrete is a highly durable material. However, the history of concrete in marine environments shows that no construction material is infallibly durable to seawater, which presents one of the most corrosive natural environments in the world. Many inland structures in Europe built by the Romans with lime-pozzolan cement have withstood the ravages of time for two thousand years. On the other hand, few such ancient structures have survived on the sea coasts. We will never know about those numerous old structures that have fully succumbed to the destructive forces of the ocean.
