ABSTRACT

Maruna (1997) observes that the fact that most young offenders eventually grow out of offending behaviour is one of the most well-known fi ndings in criminology (see Rutherford, 1992), and notes that what is less well known is what this change process actually involves; he argues that this lack of understanding stems from the shortcomings of the traditional criminological framework for examining desistance. The good news is that most juvenile delinquents are leading quite successful lives by the age of 32 (Farrington, 1995).
