ABSTRACT
The Second World War began, effectively, with the German invasion of Poland. This event, in itself, might have been a comparatively local incident. What was required to turn it into a wider European war and a world war was the participation of Britain and France, which had both pledged to come to Poland’s aid in the event of overt German aggression. The reasons why the British and French found themselves in this position may be traced to several years previously.
