ABSTRACT

MARCHE 1588 AND 1589 This important document is Harley MSS. 6848, ff. 83 recto-84 recto. It is significant because it reveals details of the meetings held by the Separatists, the times and places, the nature of the services, the attitudes and beliefs on the Lord’s Prayer, sacraments, and marriage. It also reveals details about the excommunication of Mr. Love and of his reasons for leaving the Separatists. This document further indicates the severe criticisms against the Anglican preachers. The Separatists insist on the right of laymen to preach the gospel, and they deny that the queen has any power to appoint ministers. With Robert Browne, they teach that reformation should proceed without tarrying for the magistrate’s permission.
