ABSTRACT

This petition to the Privy Council is found in Lansdowne MSS. 109, no. 14, ff. 37–40. It includes “A Breife Declaration of Our Faith and Loyaltie to Her Majestie,” possibly influenced by Penry’s “Confession of Faith” and “Apology,” and probably stimulated by a set of fifteen articles which attacked the Separatists. These articles were entitled: “An Abstract of the Opinions Which the Brownists Do Mainteyn.” A second part of the petition sought to refute two rumours circulated against the Separatists, viz., that they denied the role of the hierarchy and the magistrates, and that they were heretics and schismatics.
