ABSTRACT

MU is a herpes encephalitic patient whose knowledge of a set of categories we have previously investigated (Borgo &, Shallice, 2001). He had the selective problem with comprehension and naming of living things previously found in over 20 patients with this aetiology (Borgo, 2001; Capitani et al., 2003-this issue; Gainotti, 2000; Warrington &, Shallice, 1984). We showed, however, that his impairment also extended to three additional categories-edible and nonedible substances, drinkable and nondrinkable liquids, and materials-which we called collectively masskinds. Difficulty with mass-kind categories had also been reported by Warrington and Shallice (1984) in one of their original herpes categoryspecific patients, JBR.
