ABSTRACT

The notion of the heroic leader has passed down from generation to generation through stories such as the epic tales from the battlefields of the Ancient Greeks or from the Hindu Mahabharata. Every culture has its own myths and legends shaping our idea of leadership over millennia. Further back in history at a time when humans formed hunter-gatherer communities we can imagine the skills that a leader of a hunting party needed for success: task focus, communication skills, analysis skills and stature learned by emulating elders. Such a cultural heritage informs our ideas about leadership today and summarised below is a concept of what leadership within a Western organisation often entails.
