ABSTRACT

Loosely, delusions are firmly held, irrational beliefs, which are considered not to be true by most other people, and hallucinations are sensory experiences that seem real to the person experiencing them, but which have no counterpart in reality. Do delusions and hallucinations originate in the outer me or the inner me? The answer must surely be neither. The inner me is concerned with the attainment of objectives. It is not, cannot be, devious. The outer me is devious in so far as it pretends, lies and cheats, but these are all conscious contrived behaviours. Delusions are not consciously contrived, and hallucinations are not consciously created. This only leaves the in-between me, functioning as it does on the border between the inner me and the outer me.
