ABSTRACT
THE SECOND SERIES REPRESENTS a seven-stage alchemical process1 that builds upon the transformations shown in the First Series. The Second Series simultaneously conveys a broad, objective perspective and an intensely felt but contained internal experience. Each painting in this series has the same basic structure: a large central niche containing an alembic, surrounded by scenes of people engaged in the affairs of everyday life; in the sky above, a Greco-Roman god or goddess rides in an ornamented chariot with astrological signs of the Zodiac on its wheel(s), each chariot drawn by a pair of animal or human figures.
