ABSTRACT

What is it about older therapists that is so appealing? Although their bodies inevitably show signs of age, their spirits often maintain a vibrant sense of curiosity and liveliness that many in their 20s might envy. To embark on a career in psychotherapy is to enter into a lifelong journey of self-exploration-an ever-deepening appreciation of one’s own humanity and the strengths and vulnerabilities of humankind. Therapists in their elder years have a hard-won wisdom. They have walked with their clients “through the valley of the shadow of death” and arrived at a place where they can truly appreciate life in all its complexity.
