ABSTRACT
An engagement is the period of preparing for a marriage. It involves the planning of a ceremony, but it is also the time when two individuals become a couple. Physically, Clemens had lectures to give and a manuscript to prepare for publication. Livy had a wedding to plan and a household to set up. But spiritually, each had an image of what a husband and wife should be. Happily for both, the other was malleable, pliably in love.
