Introduction

The fields represented in the following chapters range from comparative literature to the study of religion, and from Byzantine literature to cultural studies. The theoretical preoccupations of the contributors present a wide variety: from genre explorations in Byzantine literature (Agapitos) to dual identity in contemporary Greek diaspora novels (Kallan). New light is shed on topics ranging from the echoes and representations of ancient poets in the modern Greek literary production of the last two centuries (Yatromanolakis) to the application of postmodern theoretical concepts to early precursors of women’s writing (Barbeito and Calotychos). The chronological and thematic itinerary of the following chapters follows the roadmap of modern Greek scholarship, but the perspective is refreshingly original.
