Muslim Terminology and World of Discourse book
The stunningly obtuse vocabulary that we have seen above, used by common people, leaders, clerics and intellectuals throughout the Islamic world, raises the question whether humankind, in its large variety of cultures, resorts to the same words and notions to describe the same phenomena, or whether we have to inquire about the meaning of each word when uttered by a member of a different civilization and make sure that what we hear or read is what is meant. In fact, people use the same words to signify different meanings and notions, because each word, which had developed in its socio-cultural environment to respond to a local cultural need, has been borrowed, often by default, and moulded into a different mindset, in which it necessarily carries a whole gamut of significances which are culturally different to the culture from which they were borrowed.
