ABSTRACT

Earlier chapters have established that classification within high-performance sport for the disabled has an important cultural political influence on the Paralympic Movement. Classification of bodies determines whether someone is eligible for Paralympic competition. Those who are eligible can benefit from technology that enables the remaking of their impaired bodies. The impact of technology is felt particularly strongly in the new commercial environment that is key if the IPC is going to continue its ‘progress’ to be just like the IOC. Commercial influences are being exerted on the Paralympic Movement in the area of mobility technologies, since many athletes require the use of either a wheelchair or a prosthesis for general mobility and competition.
