      ABSTRACT

The developments at Stoke Mandeville have been credited with starting the international sports movement for disabled people. Rather than being idealistic about the values of disabled sport, we should remember that its modern organized roots were driven by political expediency. These do not lie in sporting values for themselves, but in the use of sport, competitive activities and rehabilitation practices as a method of transforming paralysed ex-servicemen into taxpayers.
