ABSTRACT
In this chapter, we assert that every research act is an act of creating a new way of understanding and perceiving, a new map of the territory, as Alfred Korzybski stated, “the map is not the territory.” This simple phrase reflects our basic constructivist stance. The map represents reality, but it is not reality itself. All of our knowledge may be thought of as maps – symbolic representations of our perceptions of reality. In a nutshell, this dictum captures the essence of the distinction between ontology and epistemology, and the relations between the two.
