Alibaba was founded by Jack Ma in 1999 – an English teacher turned entrepreneur, who freely describes himself as a “trickster” and “lunatic”. Ma is renowned for his “crazy antics”, but the result is fanatical loyalty inside the company, with arcane rituals and even funny hats and an almost cult-like following.
