      ABSTRACT

In 1921, writing for a popular audience, Hauer seemed to see the regeneration of Germany in the rather unimaginative terms of an analogy with the Israelites of the eighth to sixth centuries BC. This kind of analogy has been commonly used by founders of new religions including, for example, African Independent Churches (Poewe 1993). According to Hauer, those centuries were a time of hostile invasions, mighty battles and political shake-ups, and it was prophets such as Amos and Isaiah, with their highly concentrated personalities and minds open to eternity, who gave new shape to the future of the Israelite Volk. It is something that Germany is in need of today.
