ABSTRACT
Reed remained in Italy for less than a month. A full medical examination revealed no serious ailments beyond extreme fatigue, so he was granted a week of complete rest, during which he did little but sleep.1 He was billeted in a luxurious apartment which had formerly belonged to a wealthy fascist dignitary, and which had since been appropriated by his mistress, who had in turn offered it to ISLD.2 Although glad of the opportunity to recuperate, Reed was impatient to return to Yugoslavia, despite the mounting tension between the Western Allies and the Partisans which had so seriously complicated his task in Istria and Slovenia.3
